3V Member Profile Series- Bill Smalley

Coming from a long line of military officers and business people, Bill Smalley was seemingly destined to become one or the other but it took an ugly incident on Remembrance Day 1971 to turn him away from his reserve infantry career and his offer of a place on the Regular Commissioning Course and towards his career in business.  Nevertheless, his military training and fascination for military strategy has come along with him for the past 50 years and continues to inform his consultancy, guidance and teaching of business leaders to this day.
Whether it is persuading you to trust your entire team to understand your plan or guiding you to embrace the power of concentration of resources in marketing, Bill can easily draw tangible lines between what works well in the theatre of war and what is needed behind the closed doors of business.  Operating instinctively through the lens of service, Bill’s approach to business is always to seek the authentic, the clear and the meaningful way forward.  What drove him to sign up for the Lorne Scots as a teenager still drives him today.  He is looking to make his world a better place, only now his main armament is a deep and respected knowledge of today’s killer strategies in all aspects of sales and marketing.
If you want a bit of the spirit of Vimy Ridge in your business or if you want to know what it means to have your business’ “flanks protected” then a conversation with Bill will be a good place to start.  His passion for authentic, humble, servant leadership in all situations will likely leave an impression on you and your team.  You’ll get to appreciate how a career that was once seemingly derailed had really been serendipitously steered into the arena where Bill can serve his country even more significantly, by bolstering and building Canada’s commercial leadership capability.
