Knowing what you are aiming for and understanding where you are today are absolutely essential to being able to make and stick to a plan to get you to where you want to be.  Imagine starting a military mission in whatever branch or arm you served without knowing exactly where you were going, why you were going there, what resources you have available and not knowing accurately where you were standing right now.  It’d be both impossible and very demoralizing for you and your colleagues (in the financial sense this is your family, especially your spouse, if you have one).
