2024 Mark Walden Award Winners

The Mark Walden Award is to recognize a deserving member of 3V who has gone above and beyond in contribution and living the 3V values and principles. Happily, this year it was again impossible to give it to just one member. We are delighted to announce that the award winners for 2024 are David Sutcliffe and Ray Joseph.

David Sutcliffe has been a 3V member since 2013 and as such active not only in Ottawa but also nationally where he serves as Treasurer on the National Board. He served on the Ottawa chapter committee where he took care of chapter communications posting regular updates for the membership. He is passionate about Treble Victor and for years acted as 3V liaison with the Prince’s Operation Entrepreneur. Since his move to Montreal to take on a new job he volunteered to take on the chapter lead and gathered a small keen group around him to organise regular events and recruit new members. David is constantly active reaching out to other organisations, military units and individuals to promote the 3V mission. In doing so he has revitalised the Treble Victor chapter in Montreal. David’s active involvement and leadership in Treble Victor has clearly gone over and beyond what can be expected of a volunteer.

Ray Joseph has been an extraordinarily active member of 3V since its very early days.  His efforts to support events and attract members have been consistently strong over the years. Ray was part of the initial team that designed and ran the mess dinners in Toronto, including the joint event that 3V hosted with the Invictus Games at Casa Loma.  Since then, he has supported every mess dinner in Toronto.  He has also strongly supported many Veterans on Bay Street (VOB) events.  Both the mess dinners and the VOB events have become marquis events on the Toronto veterans and business executive scenes.

Ray continues to be the driving force behind the 3V Toronto events and continues in his role as Events Coordinator.  He has lead or supported all 3V events for many years.  His attention to detail for the St. Patrick’s Day and Remembrance Day events over the years has led to these being some of the better attended events for the Toronto Branch.

Ray is also an active member of the Toronto Black Watch Association (TBWA) and is the current President.  In addition, Ray is an active member of the RCR Association.  In his leadership roles in both of these organizations, Ray has worked tirelessly to include 3V Toronto in many joint events thereby enhancing the quality and attendance of the events for TBWA, the RCR Association and 3V Toronto.

Ray truly walks the walk.  He just celebrated 40 years of service to the CF and is the Aide de Camp of the Lt Governor or Ontario.  His ability to jump in and either organize or support events for 3V Toronto has been a key contributor to the success of the Toronto Branch.  Not an event goes by without Ray ensuring that pictures are taken with the 3V branding front and centre.  Ray is a true ambassador of 3V and is very deserving of the Mark Walden Award.

The takeaway from the award this year is that the Group isn’t looking for a particular type of member, contributor or input. Simply offer what you can, don’t wait to be asked. It will be greatly appreciated, like we greatly appreciate David and Ray.
